Rupert Alexander Lloyd Grint was born on August 24th 1988 in Harlow, England, UK, to parents Nigel and Jo. His father, Nigel, is a former dealer of Formula One (racing) memorabilia, while his mother, Jo (Parsons), is a homemaker.

A firstborn son and eldest of five siblings, Rupert has one brother, James (born in 1990), and three sisters: Georgina (born in 1993), Samantha (born in 1996) and Charlotte (born in 1998.

Rupert currently resides in Hertfordshire, where his family and most of his friends live, and is very much a classic English county, and may largely be credited for keeping Rupert level-head. Here Rupert went to a Catholic primary school, and then attended an all-boys school— the Richard Hale Secondary School. While in school, he took avid interest in school plays and drama.

Before making the giant leap into the motion picture industry with Harry Potter, Rupert had only performed in a few school plays and some stage productions in his local theatre group— the Top Hat Stage & Screen School. Some of his known roles were: a fish in “Noah’s Ark,” a donkey in a nativity play, a chorus player in “Cinderella,” a Rooster in “Annie,” and as Rumpel in “Rumpelstiltskin,” among others.

Rupert was already a big fan of the Harry Potter books when he heard of the chance to try out for the role of his favorite character in the series, Ron Weasley. It was on the BBC children’s news program and website, CBBC NewsRound, that he first came to know about the auditions for Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. He submitted the application forms, pictures of himself, and other required documents. Subsequently, he heard that some of the other kids sent audition-videotapes, so when he didn’t get an immediate response; he decided to send one too.

Unlike the other kids, however, Rupert’s audition-video was original, creative and funny. Filmed by his mom, it featured a skirt-wearing Rupert, pretending to be his female drama teacher and performing rap/hip-hop lyrics, which he wrote himself, about how much he wanted the role, and why he deserved to be chosen to play Ron Weasley in the films.

His video captured the attention of the casting department so much that Rupert got a call right away to come in for more auditions, which comprised of reading character lines and doing a screen test. Rupert eventually secured the role of Ron in the Harry Potter films. And though the rest, as they say, is history… it was just the beginning for our Rupert.

Rupert Grint continues to inspire many young hopefuls as his entry into stardom proves that you can succeed in anything if you take your best shot at it. And we know that with his attitude, he will continue in the industry for many years to come.
