Filmed in December 2003 Rupert appeared on BBC Radio 4 lending his voice and talent to ”Down With Skool” which is one of the many popular children’s books written by English journalist Geoffrey Willans. Rupert voices Geoffrey’s key character Nigel Molesworth.
“About Down With Skool”
So, what is this one? Nigel is a 1950s prep-school boy at St. Custard’s – a fictional (and terrible) prep school located in a carefully unspecified part of England – who constantly who picks apart the British school system with dry wit and sarcastic humor in his “diaries” – with his trademark writing which is marked by characteristically bad, but consistent, spelling. Rupert is very funny and entertaining in this broad cast. If you have not listened to it yet you may do so by clicking here. (Go to ‘audio’ and right click and save as!) Audio available thanks to the now defunct RGMS.
“Interesting Facts”
J.K. Rowling, author of the Harry Potter books, may have taken the name Hogwarts from the Molesworth books. The name features in one of Molesworth’s imitation Latin plays, while Hoggwart is also the name of the headmaster of Porridge Court, a rival school of St Custard’s.
The Molesworth Institute was established in honour of Nigel and his contributions to the world of learning.
