The text: Rupert Grint was responsible for the inevitable screaming of teenagers. But the 20-year-old’s new film doesn’t have anything to do with the wizard-in-training Ron, whom he portrays in the Harry Potter series. In Cherrybomb (directed by Glenn Leyburn and Lisa Barros D’Sa) he tumbles as if caught by a maelstrom of violence and drugs, leading towards a catastrophe. “It’s about young people who rebel, but who don’t know where the journey ends” [Maryanne] Redpath explains the motivation behind a lot of the films from the Generation section; “They start something and it gets out of control”.

The video voiceover: Rupert Grint in Berlin. His face has become famous worldwide due to his role of Ron Weasley in the Harry Potter series, where he plays the boy wizard’s best friend. In Berlin, Grint promoted his new film Cherrybomb, a story completely void of Harry Potter, wizardry and Ron Weasley. But for many fans, he remains the boy from the Potter films.
First woman: Barely anyone knows his real name. He’s Ron Weasley.
Second woman: It depends on what he does with it [i.e. his future career], I guess, I mean, what kind of roles he accepts. If it’s always going to be the same thing, I don’t think it’s going to work.
The part of his life may, but does not necessarily mean everlasting success. Some don’t make it. Macaulay Culkin: He became famous as Kevin in “Home Alone”, but little followed. Eventually he grew up and could not play Kevin anymore. The Olsen sisters became famous as kids for various TV shows, but no big movies followed. And he used to be world famous as well: Mark Hamill, who played young Luke Skywalker in Star Wars, but afterwards he went into the Black Hole.
Rupert Grint still works on creating his life as an actor after Ron Weasley, and he is thankful for the support.
Rupert [translation of the voice-over]: It’s really nerve-wracking to do something different from Harry Potter, but it’s great to have such support from the fans. It’s really cool.
If all the fans will go along with the change remains to be seen.

Rupert Grint – Red Alert at Cinema Babylon!

Translated by Karo

Yesterday, the huge accumulation of fans did not take place at the Berlinale Film Palace at Potsdamer Platz, but in front of the traditional cinema Babylon at the Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz. The reason for the jostle was the Harry Potter star Rupert Grint.
The 20-year old promoted his new film “Cherrybomb” with his co-stars Kimberley Nixon and Robert Sheehan. In the flick, the three play teenagers Luke, Malachy and Michelle, who enjoy a weekend full of alcohol, drugs, shoplifting and crashing cars. What begins as a game soon starts to gravitate towards a lethal outcome.
Their arrival to the Babylon theatre turned into a grave case for the securities yesterday. When Rupert Grint arrived in his limousine and strolled along the freshly changed red carpet, approximately 200 – mostly female –  fans were difficult to restrain. The securities had to form a living barrier.
But everything remained peaceful and Rupert signed autographs. Some lucky fans were even able to get a picture with their star.
