November 22nd, 2009, 2:01pm–We are very happy to announce to you that Rupert Grint has been confirmed to play Eddie The Eagle! According to the Tribune Irish director Declan Lowney just secured Rupert Grint to play the lead role in a $15m comedy biopic about British ski jumper Eddie ‘The Eagle’ Edwards, the unlikely hero of the 1988 Winter Olympics. “The film is really about triumph over adversity. Every single obstacle was put in this guy’s way and yet he still managed to make it to the Winter Olympics,” said Wexford-born Lowney. Originally Steve Coogan was down to play the part but has now been replaced by Grint.

Read more about it here. And why not join us in the forums to discuss in our already active Eddie The Eagle thread! We will have more news about this throughout the day so stay tuned!

Thanks Suzeeq!

UPDATE: Rupert’s reps have told us that they won’t confirm anything yet till the scripts are approved so no further details are available at this time but you know we’ll keep you updated on the development of this project! :)

    2010…what a year it’ll be!

  6. Tao says:

AWESOME!!!!! We knew it. This is why we never do “rumor controls” and stuff like that when we hear he’s got a script and could definitely be apart of it. :P I’m so excited!! $15mil isn’t going to be an indie, right?

  7. rose3 says:

OH MY GOD! I SO HAPPY TO HEAR THIS! Rupert, you’re perfect for this role. I’m a very proud fan. yay, yay, YAY!

  8. Jo says:

Exactly Tao but seriously half of us knew this was coming, I was just waiting for some news to confirm it and it happened sooner than I thought it would.

  9. Tao says:

I am just so excited. This is what it’s going to be like after HP is finally over. :D You know I love HP, but it’s great for him to have this freedom!

  11. Michelle says:

    FLY EDDIE FLY!!!

Sorry, I had to yell that. I’m just so damned excited right now!!!

  12. Ky says:

Ummm, am I the only one not too fond of this? I mean, I get the impression that Rupert doesn’t really go for these kind of movies. He should be doing more wierd and surreal stuff that he likes, not these cheesy mainstream based-on-a-true-story deals. I know everyone will hate me for saying this but w/e, it’s what I think. PLUS this means he’ll prob end up having to cut off all of that gorgeous hair of his… just sayin.

  13. Jo says:

kY Rupert’s already been quite diverse in his roles. He’s been in a dark film like CB, he’s playing in an action comedy like WT, he’s been in an adventure film like HP, he’s doing a lot of different things so why would Eddie be so bad? I know not every fan will like it, but I sure do!!!

  14. Carolyn says:

Oh, I am so freaking happy! Yay Rupey!!! :D

  15. Tao says:

I’m excited because it is different. He has done so many diverse roles. This is definitely that diverse type of thing he’s gone after. :)
