Newest Cherrybomb Interview: The Directors And The Writer!
January 30, 2009, 10:01pm–Our next installment of the Cherrybomb interviews features directors Lisa Barros D’Sa and Glenn Leyburn and script writer Daragh Carville. They discuss Rupert Grint‘s Malachy and other characters, how Cherrybomb came to be, as well as the inspiration behind the film and among other amazing tidbits.
Of the actors, Lisa and Glenn mention what type of actors they needed: “Despite the level of action in the plot, we always saw this as a character driven piece, and so we were looking for young actors who could bring real subtlety, intelligence, humour and truth to the characters – the three lead roles are testing in terms of the emotional range required, and we wanted actors who could draw out the subtext of their characters.” Obviously Rupert’s turn as Ben proved he could handle this range, even without speaking a word!
Daragh also talks about one of his favorite scenes which we’ve seen one photo from, the bar/club scene! He said, “I watched some of it last week and was just really taken with the stuff they’d shot in the Lifeboat, the bar/club sequences, which are so authentic and true and atmospheric. Very often movies get those things wrong, when you see a club scene or disco, it all looks a bit embarrassing, and this feels just very real.”

That was an amazing interview! Wow. I’m going to have to read it again to absorb it all properly. I had no idea that Ireland really doesn’t have any teen movies. As an American whose culture is saturated with them, that’s so hard to imagine. This makes the film even more important to Irish cinema. I can’t freaking wait to see it.
@Jesi: Thanks for the alert. I just voted; it looks like the Twihards have taken over the poll.

That was a great interview. And I didn’t think it would be possible, but now I’m even MORE intrigued. A “hilarious” thriller and romance? Up to this point, I’d thought it would be mostly pretty heavy. There are certainly some heavy issues in it: drugs, illegal acts, sexual manipulation, Luke’s dysfunctional family, violence…but they keep talking about all the humor, too.
Oh, man. I hope at the very least, this makes it to a festival on this side of the Atlantic, because I have GOT to see this movie!

So have I! Please Please Please let it come out in Australia!
Hi, I’m Ellie, I’ve been a lurker here for a while (I think I posted here once) but my excitement about this film compelled me to post.
At first I was a bit put off by the violence in it, but the more I read about it, the more it interests me, especially the characters in it, they sound really complex and really real, y’know!
I want to see a trailer real soon!

thank you so much girls for this interesting and detailed interview, I really loved it. The writer saying the consquences are hilarious is kind of confusing to me… but it only makes me even more curious about the movie. And I’m glad to know they all thought the casting was perfect

Guys, I think by “hilarious” they’re talking about the beginning of the “competition.” They’re not talking about the end game. It just means that there will be some humor to the competition at first, which is good because when it takes a dramatic turn it will have more effect.
